UNIZIK female graduate dies while escaping dangerous prank

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

Ifunanya Miracle, a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Department of Quantity Surveying, has tragically lost her life in a misguided prank on the school premises in Awka, Anambra State.

The incident occurred during an attempt by a fellow school mate to prank Ifunanya and her friend, Peace, a student of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, which resulted in Ifunanya’s fatal injury.

PUNCH Metro reported that Ifunanya, known as Bliss among her peers, operated a Point-of-Sale business on campus. On the evening of June 9, 2024, after closing her business, Ifunanya and Peace boarded a tricycle. During the ride, a fellow passenger allegedly demanded their phones, prompting the two friends to jump out of the moving vehicle to escape.

Tragically, Ifunanya struck her head on the ground during the escape attempt and succumbed to her injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital.

Peace, though injured, survived and is currently receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator later claimed the incident was a prank, which escalated tragically due to the victims’ attempt to flee.

The school’s spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the incident, noting that the perpetrator, a final-year student, will face disciplinary actions following Ifunanya’s burial.

“The university deeply regrets this unfortunate event and urged students to refrain from engaging in dangerous pranks,” Dr. Ojukwu emphasized.

The families involved have reached agreements regarding funeral arrangements and medical bills, emphasising the need for caution in such situations to prevent further tragedies.
