We spent N62 million on provision of fishing inputs in 2021- FCTA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has hinted that during the previous year, it spent around 62 million naira on the provision of fishing inputs across the Six Area Councils.

Abubakar Ibrahim, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat (ARDS) made this announcement on Thursday at the 2022 end-of-year media briefing in Abuja.

According to him, the money was used to buy a variety of fishery inputs, including recent distributions of fish at a 50% subsidy to FCT fishermen as well as cold storage facilities, culture tanks, fish seeds, and fish.

He said: “The initiative would cushion the effect of COVID-19 and promote commercial aquaculture in the Nation’s Capital, Abuja.

“It is now essential to create new fish species to diversify fish populations, increase fish productivity, and avoid eventual boredom.

“The programme will directly affect domestic fish production, the economy of the FCT, and job growth throughout the value chain.

“We have taught well over 2,600 fish farmers and cooperative organizations in the utilization of locally accessible resources for feed production in our bid to further bridge the vast gap between fish demand and supply.

“We have made provision for assorted fishery inputs ranging from cold storage facilities, culture tanks, fish seeds and feeds worth about N62 million naira. The items were distributed to them recently,” he further stated.
