Workers’ Day: Abba Yusuf congratulates Kano workers, pledges improved welfare, reforms

The Kano State governor-elect, Abba Yusuf, has pledged to review the ongoing staff recruitment exercise by the outgoing administration of Abdullahi Ganduje.
In his Workers’ Day message, as contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Monday, Mr Yusuf described the exercise as “job racketeering and nepotism”.
He criticized the outgoing government for engaging in reckless recruitment that is riddled with nepotism and vowed to revisit the process when his administration is inaugurated on May 29.
According to him, his government would ensure that a credible recruitment process is put in place for all citizens with the required qualifications to compete.
“We shall not allow the civil service to be misguided by corruption and nepotism. We must check the job racketeering in Kano state as a priority to restore the lost glory of the service,” he said.
Abba Yusuf, who resigned from the state civil service over a decade ago, served for more than 20 years in various capacities across the state’s water sector.
He congratulated workers from both public and private sectors in the State on the occasion of Workers’ Day 2023, noting that workers are the key to delivering good governance under any democratic dispensation.
The governor-elect also assured state civil servants of improved welfare, including prompt payment of salaries and pensions, by the incoming administration of the NNPP.
He said the leadership of the incoming government is quite aware of the problems facing state civil servants, including unfavourable working conditions and inadequate manpower, which have been noted for redress.
The statement added that “Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf assured the State civil servants of improved welfare including prompt payment of salaries and pension by the incoming administration of the NNPP.
“Engr. Abba said the leadership of the incoming government is quite aware of the problems facing the State civil servants including unfavourable working conditions and inadequate manpower which have been noted for redress.”
The governor-elect said his government would be committed to reforming the civil service as part of efforts towards strengthening the system for effective and efficient service delivery.
“As contained in our blueprint, we will establish a Training Institute for the civil servants to be up to date with global best practices,” the statement said.
