In the volatile theatre of Nigerian politics, where transitions are frequently defined by friction and the shadows of “godfatherism,” Yobe State has quietly emerged as a rare bastion of stability. Since 1999, the state has cultivated a unique culture of political continuity that has arguably become its most significant developmental asset. At the helm of this trajectory is Governor Mai Mala Buni, whose philosophy of bridge-building demonstrates that sustainable progress is only possible when the political atmosphere remains tranquil.
The Peace Premium of the Gov. Mai Mala Buni-led Administration
Governor Buni has refined Yobe’s legacy of smooth transitions into a gold standard for regional leadership. By prioritising inclusive governance over political ego, his administration has secured what can be termed a “Peace Premium.” While other leaders are consumed by internal party warfare, Buni has remained focused on high-impact projects that directly improve the quality of life for his constituents.
The results are empirical. Yobe State was recently recognised as the top-performing state in Nigeria for primary healthcare delivery an achievement bolstered by a $1.2 million grant. This success stems from a systematic revitalisation of healthcare centres across all 178 political wards. Beyond health, the physical landscape of Damaturu has been modernised with the state’s first flyover, while new ultramodern markets in Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashua have repositioned Yobe as a revitalised commercial hub.

A National Architect of Conflict Resolution
Governor Buni’s influence extends far beyond the borders of Yobe. He has evolved into an indispensable national mediator, often called upon to extinguish political fires across the federation. His track record of reconciling aggrieved heavyweights within the APC and his steady hand in managing complex internal affairs have cemented his reputation as a leader who navigates divergent interests without creating enemies. This capacity for reconciliation has seen numerous governors and legislators seek refuge under his umbrella of stability, proving that a calm, calculated approach is a necessary antidote to a turbulent political landscape.
The High Cost of Political Friction
The maturity displayed in Yobe stands in stark contrast to the chaotic power struggles currently crippling other states. When leaders prioritise dominance over diplomacy, the citizenry pays the price through stalled infrastructure and administrative paralysis.
We see the consequences in Rivers State, where the rift between Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara led to significant unrest and a declared state of emergency in early 2025. Similarly, in Kano State, the protracted feud between Abdullahi Ganduje and Rabiu Kwankwaso eventually fractured the state’s core institutions, culminating in the high-profile resignations of the Governor and Deputy Governor in early 2026. These rivalries serve as a cautionary tale: the electorate is always the primary casualty of elite vendettas.
Preserving the Legacy
As an admirer of Yobe’s progress and a concerned Nigerian, I hope the state remains vigilant as it approaches its next leadership transition. The foundation laid by the Buni administration is too vital to be risked. The next leader must recognise that “Yobe Peace” is not a sign of political passivity, but rather the engine of the state’s success. To maintain these dividends, the incoming leadership must continue to choose consensus over confrontation.
