Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor.
Garo, a seasoned political figure, is also the son-in-law of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. His nomination follows the resignation of the former deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026, after a political fallout with the governor.
Gwarzo’s exit came amid mounting tension, as the Kano State House of Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against him over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial mismanagement. Following his resignation, Governor Yusuf further accused him of attempting to undermine his administration.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said the nomination was in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy where a vacancy exists.
According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state. The governor urged the Assembly to grant swift approval to enable continuity in governance.
Describing the nominee as an experienced administrator, the statement highlighted Garo’s over two decades of service in both elective and appointed roles. His political résumé includes serving as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
He also previously held positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and was the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.
The governor’s office noted that the nomination is part of ongoing efforts to укреп governance and ensure effective service delivery in Kano State.
