5 traffickers arrested as NiDCOM hands over rescued victims to NAPTIP

In a recent operation, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) successfully rescued seven young Nigerian women who had been trafficked to Ghana. The operation, which led to the arrest of five traffickers, was made possible through the collaboration of Ghana’s Anti-Human Trafficking Police, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra.

Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed gratitude for the support of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other key figures, highlighting the importance of the collaborative efforts between Ghana and Nigeria in addressing human trafficking.

She praised the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to protecting Nigerian citizens at home and abroad.

The rescued victims, aged between 18 and 29, are from various states, including Anambra, Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Edo, and Ebonyi. They were reportedly lured to Ghana under the guise of employment but were later forced into exploitation. The traffickers had reportedly coerced them into taking oaths of silence to ensure non-disclosure.

Following their return, the young women and the arrested traffickers were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

According to Akinboye Akinsola, representing NiDCOM, the October 24th operation in Tema, Ghana, marks one of the highest arrests in a single anti-trafficking raid.
