At least two people have lost their lives while more than 50 homes were destroyed after a violent rainstorm swept through Dokan Mai-Jama’a community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Village Head, Hamisu Tukur, said the storm struck on Monday evening, leaving widespread destruction and displacing several residents.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rainfall began around 6:41 p.m. and lasted for nearly 40 minutes, accompanied by strong winds that ripped off rooftops and flattened buildings. Many affected families were seen searching through the rubble in an attempt to recover their belongings.
The storm also wreaked havoc in Sabon Gyero area within Millennium City, where several houses and more than 10 perimeter fences were damaged. Flooded roads and fallen structures reportedly disrupted traffic, forcing motorists to use alternative routes.
Residents of the affected communities have appealed to the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency for urgent assistance.
Emergency response officials have commenced assessments of the affected areas, with NEMA deploying a team to determine the scale of destruction and immediate humanitarian needs.
Rainstorms frequently cause devastation during the rainy season in northern Nigeria, often leading to casualties and destruction of property. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has already warned of heavier rainfall this year, heightening concerns over possible future disasters.
