FRSC intensifies efforts to combat overloading, night trips nationwide

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has escalated its enforcement efforts across the country to curb overloading of vehicles and night trips, following a recent directive to its Commanding Officers.

The corps has announced plans to collaborate with stakeholders to raise awareness about the risks associated with these practices.

Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu, issued the directive in a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal, Jonas Agwu, in Abuja on Monday.

Ali-Biu emphasised the urgent need to crack down on drivers engaging in speeding, overloading, and night journeys, particularly in light of two fatal accidents on Monday resulting in the loss of 17 lives.

The first accident took place at Tashar Yari village on the Zaria-Kano Expressway in Kaduna State, involving a trailer overloaded with grains and passengers seated atop the goods. The trailer, registered as KTG 454 ZZ, was on a night trip from Azare when it crashed due to reckless overtaking, speeding, and overloading.

This tragedy claimed 12 lives and left 28 others with varying degrees of injuries.

The second accident occurred on the Yangoji-Gwagwalada expressway in the FCT, where a speeding J5 bus on a night journey collided with a stationary trailer, leading to a fiery explosion resulting in the deaths of five individuals who were burnt beyond recognition.

Ali-Biu expressed grave concern over the increasing rate of road accidents caused by night trips, overloading, and blatant disregard for legal speed limits. He highlighted the dangers of night trips, which include poor visibility, driver fatigue, speeding, and delays in post-crash response.

In response to these alarming trends, Ali-Biu instructed commanding officers to intensify enforcement activities, engage all relevant stakeholders, and conduct extensive advocacy campaigns to address this pressing issue.
