FG terminates Kano-Maiduguri road contract over delay

The Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has cancelled the contract for Section 1 of the Kano-Maiduguri road project due to ongoing delays.

The decision was announced by Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, on Saturday.

The contract, awarded to Dantata & Sawoe Ltd in 2007, has faced numerous setbacks, prompting Umahi to describe the situation as “the effluxion of time.”

The Minister criticized the slow progress and the impact on road users, stating, “We will no longer fold our hands and allow the projects we have awarded and even reviewed to continue to linger.

Nigerians are suffering on these roads, and President Bola Tinubu is giving the road sector special attention.”

In response to the delays, the Ministry of Works has dispatched a technical team to assess damage caused by recent flooding to another section of the road in Bauchi State.

Umahi also announced plans to hold Mothercare Ltd accountable for the road’s failure to withstand the flood, despite its recent completion.

The Minister met with representatives from Dangote Group, BUA Group, and Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd to review other road projects funded under the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.

He emphasized the need for durability and value for money, calling for a review of the liability period for federal projects to prevent premature deterioration.

Umahi urged contractors to expedite their work and meet project milestones, reinforcing the President’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s infrastructure.
