Woman flees after setting husband ablaze during domestic dispute

Tragedy struck in Iperu, Ogun State, as a special constable with the Ogun State Police Command, Abidemi Ayinde, was set ablaze by his wife, Sarah Ayinde, following a domestic altercation. The suspect is currently on the run.

The incident occurred on December 12, 2024, at their residence on No. 20 Igboore Street, escalating from what was described as a minor dispute.

According to an anonymous source, the argument turned violent, leading Sarah to allegedly douse her husband with a flammable substance and set him on fire.

“There is an incident in Iperu. A police constable was set on fire by his wife. They argued, and the wife set him on fire. He is currently hospitalised,” the source disclosed.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, revealed that Abidemi Ayinde was rushed to Bolawatife Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.

“The suspect, Sarah Ayinde, remains at large, and efforts are underway to apprehend her. The division’s crime branch is conducting further investigations into the matter,” Odutola said.

This incident echoes a similar tragedy in October 2019, where a policeman attached to the Lagos State Police Command’s Highway Patrol Team fatally shot his wife during a domestic dispute at their Ikoyi barracks residence before taking his own life.

As investigations continue, the Ogun State Police Command has assured the public that justice will be served and emphasised the importance of addressing domestic violence to prevent such tragic outcomes.
