Damboa attack: Fallen soldiers are eternal heroes — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has paid glowing tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives defending Nigeria during the recent terrorist attack in Damboa, Borno State, describing them as “eternal heroes” whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, on Friday in Abuja, Shettima expressed profound sorrow over the loss of six soldiers during the attack at a Forward Operating Base in Sabon Gari. The Vice President, however, praised their courage and the military’s decisive response, which neutralised 34 terrorists and recovered weapons and ammunition.

Shettima said, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I received news of our brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation in Damboa. These valiant soldiers demonstrated exceptional courage in protecting their fellow citizens.”

The Vice President noted that the military’s victory in neutralising the attackers marks significant progress in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, albeit at a steep cost.

Shettima reassured the grieving families of the fallen soldiers that their sacrifices would not be in vain. He said, “Their sacrifices will forever be remembered in our nation’s history, inspiring future generations of Nigerians.”

He further prayed, “May Allah grant our fallen heroes Aljannah Firdaus, comfort their families, and give us the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

The Vice President urged Nigerians to honour the memory of the fallen heroes by standing united in the pursuit of peace and security. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to providing the armed forces with the necessary resources to effectively carry out their duties.

“To our armed forces, your unwavering commitment to protecting our citizens, even at the cost of your own lives, fills us with profound gratitude and respect,” Shettima said.

The Vice President concluded with a call for unity and vigilance, emphasizing the need to support the military in its efforts to secure the nation.

The attack in Damboa involved an attempted ambush by terrorists, which was met with a swift and strategic military response bolstered by reinforcements and air support from Operation HADIN KAI. This operation not only averted a major crisis but also showcased the resilience and effectiveness of Nigeria’s armed forces in tackling insecurity.
