Police arrest herbalist, brother for killing client

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old herbalist, Amechi Okwuokenye, and his 26-year-old brother, Smart Okwuokenye, for allegedly kidnapping and killing two men in Owa-Alidima, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said in a statement on Sunday that the victims’ bodies had been found and taken to the mortuary for examination.

According to him, the case started on September 30, 2025, when 22-year-old Friday Liberty went to visit the herbalist and never came back home.
Liberty’s family later heard from his girlfriend that he had gone to see a herbalist. When they contacted the herbalist, he denied seeing Liberty but claimed he would perform rituals to help find him. After waiting with no result, the family reported the matter to the police on October 14, 2025.

Detectives began an investigation and found out that the herbalist was the last person who saw Liberty. After days of surveillance, the police arrested Amechi on October 23, 2025, at his shrine, where he was hiding inside a refrigerator.
During questioning, Amechi confessed that he and his brother kidnapped Liberty and a motorcycle rider named Isioma Ugbeje, who had carried Liberty to the shrine. He said Liberty had been his regular customer and that his brother convinced him to lure one of his clients for ransom.
They demanded ₦10 million from the victims’ families. When the ransom plan failed, they killed both men and dumped their bodies in a soakaway pit near the shrine.
SP Edafe said both suspects are now in custody, and the victims’ remains have been taken for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, assured the public that the suspects will face justice.
