Ex-UN rights Chief slams Trump’s ‘board of peace’ as tool to entrench Israeli occupation
A former United Nations human rights chief has criticised former US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace,” describing it as a structural extension of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories rather than a genuine mechanism for resolving the conflict.
The ex-UN official argued that the initiative, which was presented as part of broader peace efforts in the Middle East, lacks neutrality and fails to address the root causes of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian crisis. According to the former rights chief, the framework reinforces existing power imbalances while sidelining international law and Palestinian rights.

Speaking on the proposal, the former UN official said the so-called peace board mirrors earlier US-backed initiatives that prioritised Israeli security concerns while neglecting issues such as illegal settlements, land seizures, and the right of Palestinians to self-determination.
The criticism also noted that the composition and mandate of the proposed board appeared designed to legitimise the status quo, effectively normalising occupation rather than paving the way for a just and lasting peace.
Trump’s Middle East policies, including the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and support for Israeli settlement expansion, have long drawn condemnation from international human rights groups and UN officials, who argue they undermine prospects for a two-state solution.

The former UN rights chief urged the international community to resist initiatives that, in their view, repackage occupation under the banner of peace, and instead push for solutions grounded in international law, accountability, and equal rights for both Israelis and Palestinians.
