Iranian President confirms talks with U.S. after Trump’s threats
Iran’s President has confirmed that Tehran is engaged in talks with the United States, following a series of threats and hardline statements issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump, in a development that signals a possible shift toward renewed diplomacy between the longtime adversaries.
Speaking on the matter, the Iranian leader acknowledged that communication channels with Washington are open, stressing that the discussions are aimed at protecting Iran’s national interests while easing mounting regional and international tensions. He noted that Iran was not seeking confrontation but would continue to respond firmly to any threats against its sovereignty.
The confirmation comes after Trump issued strong warnings against Iran, accusing its leadership of destabilising the Middle East and vowing severe consequences if Tehran pursued policies seen as hostile to U.S. interests or its allies. Trump has repeatedly criticised previous diplomatic agreements with Iran, particularly the 2015 nuclear deal, which he withdrew the United States from during his presidency.

The development has drawn mixed reactions within Iran, where hardliners remain sceptical of U.S. intentions, citing years of sanctions and diplomatic breakdowns. Reformist voices, on the other hand, view the talks as a necessary step to ease economic pressure and reduce the risk of military escalation.
International observers say the confirmation of talks suggests both sides may be seeking to avoid a direct confrontation, despite the heated rhetoric. Analysts note that back-channel diplomacy has often played a role in U.S.–Iran relations, even during periods of heightened hostility.
