IPOB officially cancels Monday sit-at-home in South-East after five years

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home directive across Nigeria’s South-East, bringing an end to a practice that has disrupted social and economic activities in the region for nearly five years.

In a statement released on Sunday, IPOB said the decision followed a directive from its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, instructing that residents should resume normal activities on Mondays without fear or intimidation. The group stressed that there is no longer any justification for the sit-at-home order.

According to IPOB’s spokesperson, the cancellation takes immediate effect, and any individual or group attempting to enforce sit-at-home henceforth would be acting against Kanu’s explicit instruction. The group urged traders, transport operators, students, and civil servants to return to work and school as usual.

The Monday sit-at-home was introduced in 2021 as a protest against Kanu’s arrest and detention, initially tied to court appearances but later evolving into a weekly shutdown. Over the years, the action significantly affected businesses, education, and public life across the South-East, with reports of economic losses and sporadic violence linked to enforcement.

The latest announcement is being viewed as a major shift aimed at restoring normalcy and economic stability in the region. Reactions from state governments, security agencies, and residents are expected as the South-East prepares for the first full Monday of unrestricted activity in years.
