FG weighs flight restrictions as Ebola threat triggers nationwide emergency measures

The Federal Government is considering imposing flight restrictions on countries affected by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Africa as Nigeria intensifies emergency measures to prevent a possible spread of the deadly virus into the country.

The development followed a high-level emergency preparedness meeting involving top government officials, health authorities, aviation regulators, and disease control experts amid growing concerns over rising Ebola cases reported in parts of East and Central African.

Officials disclosed that the government is reviewing stricter travel protocols, including possible flight limitations from affected countries, enhanced airport screening, mandatory health surveillance, and immediate isolation procedures for passengers showing symptoms linked to Ebola.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), alongside the Federal Ministry of Health, has already activated nationwide surveillance systems across airports, seaports, and land borders as part of efforts to strengthen preparedness against any potential outbreak.

Authorities also confirmed that airlines and airport operators have been placed on high alert, while medical emergency response teams have been directed to intensify monitoring and rapid response operations across the country.

Despite the heightened alert, officials maintained that no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria in relation to the latest outbreak. However, health experts warned that Nigeria remains vulnerable due to international travel movements and cross-border activities within the region.

The renewed concerns have revived memories of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when Nigeria successfully contained the deadly virus through aggressive contact tracing, emergency isolation measures, and rapid public health interventions after the disease entered Lagos through an infected traveler.
