COVID-19: 193 Almajiri tests positive in Kano

No fewer than 193 Almajiri have tested positive for coronavirus in Kano, the state’s government have announced.

The development has further fueled the controversy surrounding the ongoing reparation exercise.

Commissioner for Education, Sunusi Muhammad Kiru, while briefing the media on Thursday, said, “so far a total of 1,500 Almajiris have been evacuated from Kano to their states of origins while the state received 400.”

He said the state has banned the traditional Qur’anic Schools and anybody who wants to operate it must have a dormitory for his Almajirai.

“A situation where an Alrama would come in with 1000 Almajiris without knowing where to even put them, that system is over we will not tolerate such,” he said.

He said the government is recruiting 60 Alramas to the Civil Service to give them a sense of belonging.

The State Coordinator of COVID-19 Taskforce Response Team, Dr Tijjani Hussain said, out of about 2000 samples they collected under the house- to- house testing in Nassarawa local government, only one tested positive.

This contradicted the NCDC assertion that Nasarawa local government is amongst the local governments with a concentration of positive cases.

Hussain expressed worries over the attitude some people in the state put up that they do not still believe that the disease exists and refused to wear face masks.
