37-year-old man pleads guilty to defiling 4-year-old girl in Abia

In a disturbing and heartbreaking case, a 37-year-old man, Mr. Chiemela Victor Ekeke, has pleaded guilty to defiling a 4-year-old girl in Umuahia, Abia State. Ekeke, who is HIV-positive, was found guilty of the three-count charge of defilement by an Umuahia Magistrate court on Wednesday.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Okezuonu Obioma, an official of the Ministry of Justice, stated that the accused did not deny any of the charges brought against him. The counsel presented the facts before the magistrate court to establish the guilt of the accused.

Chief Magistrate N. Lekwa presided over the case and found the accused guilty. The court has adjourned the sentencing to July 21.

During the interrogation, Ekeke claimed that his doctor had informed him that he had a low viral load of HIV that had been flushed out of his system. Ekeke, who works as a laborer and farmer, recounted the events leading up to the incident. He stated that he had visited the victim’s home on Ogbulafor Street in Umuahia to pay back a sum of N3,000 he had borrowed from a woman related to the victim’s family.

Ekeke explained that he found the children playing in the parlor upon his arrival. As the other two children left the room, he was left alone with the 4-year-old girl. He admitted to putting her on his lap and playing with her. However, he denied having sexual intercourse with her despite the presence of blood stains on her legs. He claimed that the blood might have resulted from accidental touching.

“I only touched her for a while. When she said she wanted to go inside the room, I left her,” Ekeke stated.

After the incident, Ekeke went to the mother’s bedroom to rest, claiming to feel weak and in need of rest. The severity of this crime cannot be overstated, as it involves the violation of an innocent child.

The court will now determine an appropriate sentence for Ekeke, considering the seriousness of the charges and the impact on the victim and her family. It is essential that justice is served and that measures are taken to protect vulnerable individuals from such heinous acts in the future.
