Abducted Edo-based medical doctor regains freedom after ₦50m ransom payment

A medical doctor abducted by gunmen in Edo State has regained freedom after the payment of a ₦50 million ransom, sources have confirmed.

The doctor was reportedly kidnapped along a highway in the state while travelling, an incident that sparked concern among family members, colleagues, and residents.

Confirming the development, the Edo State Police Command said the victim has been safely reunited with family members and is currently receiving medical attention.

“The victim has been released and is in safe condition. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators behind the abduction,” the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state said.

While the police declined to officially confirm the payment of ransom, the command reiterated its stance against ransom payment, stressing that such actions embolden criminal elements.

Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Government expressed relief over the doctor’s release but condemned the rising cases of kidnapping in the state.

The Commissioner for Information said the government is working closely with security agencies to strengthen surveillance and dismantle kidnapping syndicates operating across the state.

“This unfortunate incident underscores the need for collective efforts to tackle insecurity. The government remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents,” the commissioner said.

The incident has renewed calls for improved security along highways and vulnerable areas in Edo State, as investigations continue to track down the kidnappers.

As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been announced.
