Story from Usman IBRAHIM, Yola

The Adamawa State Universal Basic Education (ADSUBEB) in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Bauchi field office has inaugurated the distribution of learning materials for over 180,000 pupils in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration in Yola, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, appreciated the contributions of UNICEF to the development of education in the state.

Fintiri, who was represented by Professor Maxwell Gidado, Chief of Staff Government House Yola, said that the state is always ready to partner with NGOs for education development in the state which is the priority of his administration.

He congratulated the pupils and their parents for the gesture and advised them to make use of the materials for quality education and for a successful future.

Mr Joel Jutum, UNICEF Education Consultant in Adamawa said the distributed items are absolutely free for the children and teachers.

“UNICEF is delighted to partner with the Adamawa State Government to sustain the implementation of initiatives geared towards improving equitable access, retention, transition, and quality education in the state”, he said.

According to him, UNICEF had impacted positively on educational development in the state through various interventions.

Jutum listed some of the interventions to include 33 blocks of 69 classrooms and offices and one fence of 256 metres commissioned by Governor Fintiri in 2021.

“Another set of 15 blocks of 30 classrooms with 90 toilets are at 95 percent completion in Hong, Michika, Guyuk, Fufore, Mubi North, and Mubi South LGAs respectively”, he said.

In his remarks, Malam Abba Bayero, Education Secretary Yola-South Local Government Area also appreciated the contributions of UNICEF and assured judicious distribution of the learning materials.

The materials include school bags, erasers, books, rulers, sharpeners, pencils, pens, chalks, dusters, and teacher guides among others.
