Anambra: ESN/IPOB suspects in military uniform kill 2 police officers

Two police officers have been fatally shot in Anambra State, Nigeria, by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN)/the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who were dressed in military uniforms.

The incident occurred near Uga roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area of the state on Thursday night.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, the officers were part of a motorcade attempting to clear traffic congestion when they encountered the gunmen, who were believed to be on a kidnapping mission.

The assailants reportedly killed two of the police officers and fled the scene.

The PPRO confirmed that the attackers wore military fatigues and that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in their vehicle, which was subsequently defused.

The police-led Mobile Forward Operating Base, which had been patrolling the area during the Christmas period, responded promptly to the incident and recovered a Lexus SUV used by the suspects as well as an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain officers.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators of the attack.

He also urged all officers and men of the Anambra State Police Command to remain vigilant and redouble their efforts in securing the people of Anambra State.

The CP commended all personnel for their tireless and courageous efforts and vowed that technology would be deployed to track down the criminals who carried out the attack on police personnel.

He also condoled with the families of the deceased officers and assured them that their loved ones would not die in vain.
