APC group protests indirect primaries in Ondo (Video)

From Bernice EKE, Abuja
A group of protesters on Wednesday stormed the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to protest against the party’s decision to adopt indirect election in the governorship primaries of the party scheduled for next week.
The group, under the name APC Youth for Change, besieged the entrance of the secretariat singing and questioning the decision to adopt a different method for Ondo primaries from that of Edo state.

Leader of the group, Okoye Ikechukwu, said to avoid the repeat of what happened in Zamfara and Rivers States in the last election, it is important for the party hierarchy to yield to the voice of reason now before it is too late.
The APC Youth said there is a subsisting case in court instituted by aggrieved members of the party challenging the constitutionality and validity of delegates that emerged from ward levels in the 2019 controversial congress.

“Democracy is about popularity and the only way to test the popularity of aspirants is by allowing direct primaries in the upcoming APC Ondo state governorship primaries.
Any aspirant wishing for the indirect primary is wicked, callous and unpopular. We appeal to our listening caretaker Committee chairman, Governor Buni, and his team not to be deceived by the antics of these unpopular politicians in Ondo state who have lost touch with the people but insisting on contesting under our great party’’, Okoye said.
While the group said it passes vote of confidence in the Caretaker Committee to do the right thing by ensuring that direct primaries are adopted, it promised to mobilize its members to monitor the primary election to ensure that it is free, fair and devoid of any manipulations.
The governorship primary election of the APC for Ondo State is scheduled for July 20.
