Appeal court overturns tribunal’s verdict, confirms Abdullahi Sule as Nasarawa Governor

The Court of Appeal Abuja has nullified the earlier decision by the State Election Petitions Tribunal that removed Abdullahi Sule as the Governor of Nasarawa State.

The tribunal had previously declared David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the governorship election.

The Court of Appeal’s three-member panel, headed by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, emphasized that the tribunal erred by basing its judgment on witness statements that were not filed within the 21-day stipulated period, as required by law.

It was stated that the tribunal’s reliance on these statements violated the legal requirement and resulted in an unjust conclusion that nullified the governor’s election.

Furthermore, the Court highlighted that the tribunal failed to consider the governor’s jurisdictional issues, resulting in the denial of a fair hearing. As a result, the tribunal’s decision was deemed invalid and all orders made against the governor and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were reversed.

Following this development, Abdullahi Sule has been affirmed as the lawfully elected governor of Nasarawa State, overturning the earlier decision by the tribunal.
