ATBU denies ‘forced marriage’ directive, describes circulating Ramadan memo as fake

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has dismissed as fake a purported internal memo circulating on social media which allegedly directed female students to accept marriage proposals during Ramadan.

In a statement issued by the university’s management, ATBU described the document as “false, misleading, and malicious,” stressing that no such directive was ever issued by the institution.

The viral memo had claimed that the university introduced a “forced marriage” policy tied to Ramadan activities — a claim the management categorically denied. Officials clarified that the institution has no policy compelling students into marriage or interfering in their personal choices.

ATBU urged students, staff, and the general public to disregard the fabricated memo and rely only on official communication channels for verified information.

The university further warned against the spread of misinformation, noting that individuals responsible for circulating false documents could face legal consequences
