Empowerment over charity: The legacy of Alhaji Dikko Nde 

What does true leadership look like? For the late Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Nde, it was the ability to see beyond handouts and open doors to lasting opportunities. He led with vision.

While others give fish, he chose to give the fishing rod. That decision didn’t just change forty lives, it built forty families and strengthened society.

One afternoon in Kaduna, a group of graduates stopped him after prayers. Instead of stretching their hands for money, they stretched their hopes for jobs. He listened, promised, and kept his word. Weeks later, forty young men stood at interview halls, their lives about to change. Today, they are officers and family men.
He did not just give handouts, he gave futures. That is the legacy of genuine leaders.

After Jumu’ah prayers in Kaduna, a group of young men stopped the late Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Nde. Expecting money, he dipped his hand into his pocket. But they surprised him.
“We don’t want money, sir. We need jobs.”

He asked about their qualifications. They were all graduates. He took their contact, returned to Abuja, and months later requested their CVs. They sent not only theirs, but those of friends too, forty in total.

Weeks later, forty invitations arrived. Forty interviews. Forty new chances at life. Today, many of them are Customs officers, building families, carrying responsibilities, and remembering the man who gave them dignity instead of coins.

True leaders don’t just hand out change. They create change.
