“It is a long-term commitment, not a one-off act of charity,” Alakija says of $23 million medical centre

Nigeria’s richest woman, Folorunso Alakija, says the $23 million medical research and training hospital she has donated to Osun State University is designed to save lives and train the next generation of doctors.

Speaking after the formal handover of the facility, Alakija described the project as a long-term commitment rather than a one-time act of charity.

The 250-bed Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital will serve as the university’s main teaching hospital while providing specialist care to patients across Osun State and neighbouring regions.

The facility houses 20 clinical departments, five non-clinical units, research and diagnostic laboratories, maternity and neonatal wards, intensive care units, and four operating theatres.

It is also equipped with CT and MRI scanners, radiotherapy facilities, and specialist services including ophthalmology.

Alakija said the opening of the hospital marks the start of a broader responsibility focused on building lasting institutions that continue to serve communities long after public attention fades.
