Environmental education neglect, key to environmental problems in Nigeria – Official

From Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

The Director Personnel Management Damaturu local government, Abubakar Disa said the key challenge of environmental problems in Nigeria is education.

Disa stated this on Tuesday while the State Committee on Sensitisation and Advocacy on Environmental Degradation visited Damaturu Emir’s palace.

He said “The curriculum of most educational institutions starting from kindergarten and nursery schools up to universities often neglect environmental education.

“The few educational institutions that make an effort in this sector are not up-to-date with information concerning global environmental challenges.

He added that local people in the communities and suburbs have little or no knowledge of environmental problems like climate change, desertification, degradation and pollution.

Disa advised that ministries of education should mandate schools to include environmental studies in their curriculums right from the grassroots.

He added that media houses and traditional rulers should key in on awareness campaigns to sensitise their subjects to ensure every community resorts to tree planting.

The Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni represented by his deputy Idi Gubana said, though the state was situated in the arid and semi-arid location, the environment is not adequately protected by human interference.

“In spite of our negative tendencies, our environment is not fully protected from human interference.

“This has resulted in increased pressure on the land for farming, indiscriminate felling of life trees for fuelwood collection, charcoal production, illegal mining activities among others”, he said.
