FG, state governors, agree to suspend implementation of LG Autonomy for 3 months

The Federal Government and state governors have agreed to a three-month moratorium on the implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy.

This decision was made after concerns were raised about the impact of the judgment on salary payments and operational viability.

“The governors are happy with the devolution of power regarding local government autonomy. The public really doesn’t know how much states spend on bailing out local governments,” said AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor.

It could be recalled that the Supreme Court ruled that governors could no longer control funds meant for local governments and directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to pay LG allocations directly to their accounts.

However, the Federal Government and governors have now agreed to a temporary suspension of the ruling to ensure a smooth transition.
