Fire engulfs TCN Alagbon Substation, causes damage to power transformer
A fire broke out at the Alagbon Transmission Substation of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), affecting one of its 60MVA power transformers.
The incident occurred at approximately 16:32hrs today when the operator on duty heard a loud bang coming from the switchyard.
Reacting swiftly, the operator proceeded to the switchyard to investigate and discovered a fire underneath the cooling fans/fins of the transformer.
Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs, issued a statement confirming the incident.
She explained that immediate efforts were made to extinguish the fire using the substation’s fire extinguisher.
Unfortunately, the oil leaking from the transformer ignited the fire further.
Consequently, the engineer in charge had to cut off the power supply to the 300MVA 330/132/33KV transformer and contacted the Federal Fire Service in Onikan as well as the Lagos State Fire Service at Dolphin Estate. The fire was eventually extinguished at 17:35hrs by the fire services.
Mbah added, “Based on our initial assessment, the damaged transformer can be salvaged and repaired. The situation is currently under control. Normal power supply to the substation was restored at 19:27hrs, and all available transformers in the station have been restored. Eko Distribution is on-site to manage the three affected 33KV feeders. Fortunately, we have redundancy in the station.”
She further assured customers relying on the Alagbon 330/132/33KV substation that they would have power supply throughout the night. TCN will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the affected transformer promptly to determine the necessary repair work.
Expressing their regret over the incident, Mbah emphasized, “We are deeply saddened by this occurrence, especially as we have successfully operated without any system collapses or major incidents throughout this year. Our engineers have been mobilized to assess and repair the transformer immediately. We will also investigate the cause of the fire to prevent similar incidents in our substations.”
