From Struggle to Stability: How Nigerian students built a functional society at Helwan University, Egypt

The academic journey for Nigerian students at Helwan University in Cairo, Egypt, was once marked by significant challenges, language barriers, excessive financial demands, and limited administrative support, creating a difficult environment, particularly for new students navigating the education system.
In response to these challenges, Musa Uba Sharif and Fatima Ma’aji Muhammad engaged in focused discussions aimed at finding practical solutions to the issues affecting Nigerian students.
These conversations became a turning point, laying the groundwork for broader collaboration and collective action among students from various departments.
What began as a discussion soon transformed into organised advocacy. Nigerian student representatives visited the Nigerian Embassy, engaged with the Nigerian Students’ Union in Egypt, and held several meetings with Helwan University administrative offices, including Student Affairs, all to address challenges related to the education sector.

Despite the stress and pressure involved, the group remained committed to achieving meaningful change.
These sustained efforts produced tangible results. Excessive and grandiose financial deductions were reviewed and reduced to more reasonable amounts, academic classes began to be conducted in English, and communication between Nigerian students and university authorities improved significantly.
Beyond academics, opportunities for social engagement and cultural celebrations were also created.
Today, these achievements have culminated in a well-functional and officially recognised Nigerian-Helwan University Students’ Foundation. The society now serves as a structured platform for support, advocacy, and unity, ensuring a more balanced and welcoming environment for current and future Nigerian students at Helwan University.
