Governors support establishment of state police

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has announced that the majority of Nigeria’s 36 state governors have endorsed the creation of state police.

This development comes as the National Economic Council (NEC) plans to review the governors’ submissions on the matter in January next year.

At the end of the NEC meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Governor Sani informed journalists that most state governors are in favor of establishing state police due to the varying security challenges they face in their respective states.

He also noted that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was the only region that had not yet submitted its position on the issue.

Governor Sani explained, “During today’s meeting, one of the topics discussed was the progress on the creation of state police. As you know, states have been submitting their proposals for the establishment of state police. Currently, 36 states have made their submissions, and it is clear that most states are in favor of state police.”

However, he clarified that the NEC had decided to postpone further discussions until the next meeting, scheduled for January, when the secretariat will present a report. The NEC has also resolved to engage stakeholders further after the panel’s deliberations.

In summary, 35 states have submitted their support for state police, recognizing the unique security challenges faced by each state.
