High Court stops Bauchi NUJ election

Story from Najibullahi ADAMU

A Bauchi State High Court has issued an order of interim injunction restraining the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) from going ahead with an election to elect new leaders following the expiration of the tenure of the present executives.

Justice M. M Abubakar issued the order after a motion filed by some members of the union namely Abdulwahab Muhammad, Garba Kabiru Abubakar, and Fatima Idris.

The complainants are challenging the composition of the members of the committee set up by the union to conduct the election otherwise called the ‘Credentials Committee’.

A spokesperson of the aggrieved members Abdulwahab Muhammad in a statement issued in Gombe said the leadership of the union also known as the ‘State Working Committee’ nominated the members of the election committee in violation of the constitution of the union ‘which stipulates that only the congress of the union is responsible for nominating the committee subject to the approval of the national secretariat’.

He said it was in view of that violation that they approached the court to stop the committee from conducting the election.

Also, in the copy of the court order obtained by Neptune Prime, the presiding judge instructed the respondents to stop parading themselves as members of the committee and exercising the powers of the credentials committee pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The judge also restrained the national secretariat of the NUJ from confirming the nominees and fixed 12th July 2023 for the hearing of the motion on notice.
