How acting clerk invited DSS officers to Lagos Assembly

Fresh Facts have emerged regarding the showdown at the Lagos State House of Assembly, alleging that the acting clerk of the assembly had earlier notified the State Security Service (SSS) of the impending chaos, and called for more security presence to avert commotion and maintain law and order at its premises.

This was contrary to initial reports that DSS operatives invaded the Lagos State House of Assembly and sealed the offices of the Speaker and his deputy.

The latest development was contained in a letter dated February 14, 2025, on Valentine’s Day, and made available to The Guardian.

In the letter, the management of the Lagos State Assembly informed security agencies in Lagos that there was credible information suggesting plans to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Obasa, on February 18, 2025.

Accordingly, the Assembly management stressed that the development posed “a potential security threat” to the Assembly and its members.

The letter, with reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323, signed by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. A. T. B. Ottun, was addressed to the DSS Director in the State, as well as the heads of other security agencies in Lagos State.

In the letter titled, “URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES,” the Acting Clerk stated: “I wish to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action.”

The letter also pointed out that the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Obasa, planned to resume office on February 18, 2025, as Speaker, thereby posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.

The Clerk further stated: “In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, February 16, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and also observing strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises until further notice.

“We look forward to your prompt attention, Sir. Thank you.”
