Insecurity: NSCDC pass out special female squad, to tackle rape, kidnapping in Bauchi

A 35-member special female squad specially trained to tackle frequent attacks on the kidnapping of students, rape, human trafficking and other crimes under the Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), graduated last weekend.

Nurudeen Abdullahi, the state Commandant of the Corps while speaking at the graduation ceremony, said that the idea of the ‘Special Female Squad’ put together by the NSCDC commandant-general is to intervene in the security challenges facing the country.

He added that the Corps in the state initially faced the challenge of assembling female officers for the training, adding that only eight officers started the training before the number later increased to 35.

“The Commandant General in his wisdom to tackle kidnapping of students, women and children, rape and human trafficking, which have become rampant in some part of the country, brought the idea of training our female personnel to intervene in some of these issues.

“In our efforts to form the squad, we had a big challenge because the female officers hid, and we had to start with only eight officers. Later, they began to join, and today, we are passing out 35 female officers.

“I commend the initiative of the instructors, who made the training very interesting, which motivated other female officers to join the squad,” the state commandant said.

While congratulating the graduands, Abdullahi charged them to be prepared for the task of securing the state, adding that they would be deployed in strategic areas of concern, including the office of the state governor’s wife.

According to the commandant, “You have been chosen and trained for a special task to ensure we have a crime-free state.”

He commended the state Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, for his support for security agencies in the state and for creating the atmosphere in which security heads bring out their talents and experiences in tackling security challenges in the state.

The state commandant also appreciated other security agencies for the synergy in tackling crime in the state, particularly the 33 Artillery Brigade in Bauchi for allowing the use of its range for the training.

In her remark at the occasion, the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, who was the special guest of honour, commended the NSCDC for the initiative, which she said had given women the opportunity to contribute to national security.

Represented by the Chairperson, Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency, Dr Yelwa Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the governor’s wife submitted that the idea showed that the Corps is gender-sensitive, and the 30 per cent affirmative derivational principle of the women was accomplished.

“The idea of training the Special Female Squad was made out of the security challenges facing the country, most especially the kidnap of Chibok and Dapchi schoolgirls and a host of others, whose memories remain fresh in our minds,” she stated.

She, therefore, advised them that despite their training, they must still be submissive to their husbands as good wives, in accordance with the teaching of the holy books.

“As you will be deployed to your various beats, be loyal, honest, trustworthy and dedicated to your job, as the money, time and energy expended on you during the training must not be in vain. You must be proud ambassadors of your families, the Corps, the state and Nigeria at large,” she advised them.
