Iran vows to resist US pressure on nuclear programme
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday declared that Tehran would not bow to what he described as excessive American demands regarding its nuclear activities, even as diplomatic engagement between the two countries resumes.
Speaking at Tehran’s Azadi Square during events marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Pezeshkian maintained that Iran remained open to scrutiny but would resist pressure.
“Our country, Iran, will not yield to their excessive demands,” he said, adding that the Islamic Republic was prepared for “any verification” and had no intention of developing an atomic bomb.
Iran and the United States returned to the negotiating table last week for the first time since the conflict with Israel in June, during which Washington carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Pezeshkian said that while Iran would stand firm against aggression, it would continue consultations with neighbours to promote regional calm.
“Our Iran will not yield in the face of aggression, but we are continuing dialogue with all our strength with neighbouring countries in order to establish peace and tranquillity in the region,” he said.
Tehran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, a claim disputed by Western governments and Israel, who argue that Iran could be pursuing nuclear weapons capability.
Iranian officials want the renewed negotiations to focus strictly on nuclear issues. The United States, however, is pushing for broader discussions that include Iran’s ballistic missile development and its backing of armed groups across the Middle East.
An AFP correspondent at the anniversary gathering reported heavier security deployment than in previous years. Crowds of supporters, including veiled women, waved national flags and held portraits of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The ceremony comes weeks after nationwide protests triggered a harsh response from authorities, with Washington at the time warning it could consider military measures in support of demonstrators.
