Lagos State govt arraigns 17 for urinating, defecating in public
The Lagos State Government has arraigned 17 individuals for urinating and defecating in public places across the state.
The development was disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X handle on Thursday.
According to the commissioner, the offenders were apprehended by operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority and subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi.

Wahab stated that the court found the defendants guilty of the environmental offences and sentenced each of them to pay a fine of ₦40,000 or serve one month imprisonment.
“Today, 17 environmental offenders apprehended by LAWMA operatives were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, for urinating and defecating in public places. The court found the defendants guilty and sentenced each offender to pay a fine of ₦40,000 or serve one month imprisonment,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated that open urination and defecation remain punishable offences in Lagos State, stressing that such acts pose serious public health risks and undermine environmental sanitation efforts.

He warned that the government would continue strict enforcement of sanitation laws to safeguard public health, protect human dignity, and maintain order in communities.
Wahab also urged residents to make use of available public sanitation facilities and comply with environmental regulations, noting that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
