Mass Abductions Crisis: South-East tops ransom payments, accounts for 40% nationwide

The South-East region of Nigeria has recorded the highest ransom payments for mass abductions in the country, accounting for 40% of the total amount paid nationwide.

A report by SMB Morgen, an Africa-focused market intelligence firm, disclosed that between July 2023 and June 2024, the region paid a staggering ₦419.2 million in ransoms.

The region continues to grapple with escalating violence driven by separatist groups enforcing sit-at-home orders. One of the most significant attacks occurred on November 18, 2024, when gunmen targeted Abatete and Ukpo communities in Anambra State, leaving four people dead, including three vigilantes and one civilian.

In Aba, Abia State, another violent incident claimed the lives of 11 individuals, including five soldiers. The Nigerian Army has blamed the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for orchestrating the attack, accusing the group of perpetuating instability in the region. Security crackdowns on separatist activities have reportedly led to civilian casualties, adding to the already tense atmosphere.

The report revealed that Anambra State bore the brunt of kidnappings in the South-East, paying ₦350.2 million—88% of the ransom demanded. Other states recorded the following figures:

Imo State: ₦39 million, Abia State: ₦25 million, Enugu State: ₦4 million, Ebonyi State: ₦1 million

Despite these alarming figures, the South-East’s ₦85.4 billion ransom payments were dwarfed by the North-West, where victims paid a staggering ₦1.2 trillion over the same period, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2024 Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey.

Across Nigeria, ransom payments during the reporting period totalled an estimated ₦2.2 trillion. Analysts have expressed concerns over the economic and social consequences of this alarming trend, which continues to burden families and communities.

Stakeholders and public figures have called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to combat the growing insecurity. “This wave of abductions and ransom payments is a national emergency,” one analyst stated. “We must address the root causes to restore peace and stability.”
