Mbappe’s problem is Real Madrid’s problem, says Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has addressed the recent struggles of star striker Kylian Mbappe, attributing them to the team’s overall lack of consistency.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s La Liga clash against Getafe on Sunday, Ancelotti defended the French forward, who has faced criticism for his recent performances, including missing a penalty during Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

“Mbappe’s problem is the problem that we all have,” Ancelotti remarked. “The idea is to try to give our best version, not just of him but myself, other players. It’s not about one player; the problem is with the whole team.”

Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid in the summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, has struggled to make a significant impact. The forward has netted just two goals in his last nine appearances and has yet to meet expectations at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Despite this, Ancelotti was quick to highlight Mbappe’s contributions, including scoring eight goals overall and providing key assists. However, he admitted the player is still adapting to his new environment.

“He’s new here and adapting. Yes, he can play better, but we all can, and we will try to,” the Italian manager stated.

Mbappe’s struggles are compounded by his omission from recent France squad lists and off-field challenges during his initial months at Real Madrid. Ancelotti insisted that the player remains focused despite the scrutiny.

“He is absolutely not sunken. He knows he has to improve like we all do,” Ancelotti added. “He’s being scrutinised after the Liverpool game because he missed a penalty, like many of my players have.”

Real Madrid’s recent dip in form has been attributed to injuries to key players such as Vinicius Junior, Dani Carvajal, and Eder Militao. The absence of these players has significantly impacted the team’s performance, including three defeats in five Champions League matches.

Despite the challenges, Ancelotti expressed confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back. “I am like Mbappe; I am trying to give my best version. I’m not happy… but I’m convinced we will fix it, like we always fix it,” he concluded.

Real Madrid, currently in second place, trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by four points. However, the team has a game in hand, giving them an opportunity to close the gap.

The match against Getafe on Sunday will be crucial as Madrid aims to regain form and confidence. Brazilian winger Rodrygo, who has been declared fit, is expected to bolster the team’s attack.
