Meta struggles to keep up as DeepSeek’s AI outpaces rivals at lower cost
Meta has reportedly assembled four teams of engineers to investigate how a Chinese hedge fund managed to release an AI model that could potentially rival its own technology.
According to reports, DeepSeek, an AI startup funded by High-Flyer Capital Management, launched its R1 chatbot this month, claiming it can match the performance of models like ChatGPT at a much lower cost.
This breakthrough has raised questions about the massive AI investments made by American tech companies and has placed Meta’s AI team on high alert. Mathew Oldham, Meta’s AI infrastructure director, has reportedly warned that DeepSeek’s model could even surpass the upcoming version of Meta’s Llama AI, which Mark Zuckerberg previously mentioned would be released in early 2025.
Meta has responded by creating four specialized “war rooms” to analyze DeepSeek’s technology. Two teams are focused on figuring out how High-Flyer managed to reduce training and operational costs, with the goal of applying those strategies to Llama. The other two teams are working to identify the data DeepSeek used for training and exploring how Llama’s models can be restructured using insights from DeepSeek’s approach.
Meta declined to comment on the matter but did state that it routinely evaluates competitive models in its development process. In a statement, a Meta spokesperson emphasized the importance of Llama in fostering the ecosystem for open-source AI and expressed excitement about the upcoming Llama 4 release.
Zuckerberg also revealed that Meta plans to invest up to $65 billion in AI-related projects in the next year, including the construction of a new data center and more AI hires.
This announcement came shortly after OpenAI, in collaboration with SoftBank, Oracle, and others, unveiled a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative called Stargate, which will establish numerous new data centers across the U.S., backed by the White House.
