No casualties reported as Surulere building collapses in late-night scare

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that there were no casualties following the collapse of a three-storey building in Surulere, Lagos.

NEMA’s territorial coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident to journalists in Lagos on Saturday.

The building crumbled at approximately 10 pm on Friday night, at 14 Ikpoh Street, Surulere.

One of the occupants of the building, Gervase Anyanwu, a businessman, recounted that all residents managed to evacuate safely before the structure gave way.

Anyanwu explained that a loud noise emanated from one of the building’s wings just before the collapse.

“Immediately we heard the sound, all the occupants of the building gathered at the mustard point, before evacuating for safety,” Anyanwu told NAN.

“No casualty was recorded,” Anyanwu added.

Anyanwu said the immediate evacuation of the occupants was “simply by the grace of God”.

However, another resident of the street revealed that the building had displayed significant signs of structural distress before its eventual collapse.

As of the time of this report, the excavation of the rubble from the building had not yet commenced. Nevertheless, all relevant government agencies responsible for emergency response had arrived at the site.
