The National Security Adviser (NSA) Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd) said it has become very imperative to expedite the battle against terrorism worldwide as casualties soar.
Monguno urged the international community to see the threat of terrorism in a particular country as a threat to the global world, which can inadeptly threaten the peace and security of nations, as terrorism is gradually becoming a contemporary weapon of violence for non-state actors in this era of globalisation.
The National Security Adviser made this known on Tuesday, during the ongoing Second United Nations High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of members states, which is being convened by the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
While expressing President Buhari’s commitment to working with all nations, not just those in the sub-region to end all forms of terrorism. He said, over the years, terrorism has continued to manifest itself to be a very vicious, relentless global threat as it doesn’t recognise a person’s border, nationality, or religious beliefs.
“I can say with total conviction that apart from pandemics, natural disasters and the climate itself, today, the greatest threat to the existence of human race is the global scourge of terrorism” the NSA stated.
He further said that preventing terrorist attacks, safeguarding borders, empowering local security in all nations, improving the criminal justice system, curbing illicit financial flows as well as clamping down on drug abuse and the intake of other hard substances have been unsuccessful for some nations over the years, Nigeria inclusive.
Monguno added that nations, who have achieved the factors mentioned have been able to address the certain levels of the scourge terrorism brings.
“The fallout of activities associated with jihadist and other forms of terror have collectively heightened insecurity in the greater part of the African continent with serious economic, social, and political implications for its people.
“In the North-Eastern part of Nigeria, the activities of Boko Haram terrorists and the so-called Islamic State West Africa Province with known affiliation to other international terror networks such as Daesh and -Qaeda have continued to undermine the security and livelihoods of the whole of the people, while at the same time overlapping into neighbouring countries of the Lake Chad Basin,” Monguno said.
Major General Babagana Monguno spoke on the controversies involving some social media platforms, which terrorists use as an avenue to push forward their agendas, recruit young people and propagate criminal ideologies that at certain times have a strong influence on citizens.
