NYSC withdraws 10 female Corps members over alleged assault
The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all Corps members serving at the Government Day Secondary School in Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State.
According to newsmen, about 10 female Corps members, serving in both the junior and senior sections of the school, were removed on Monday by the Kwara State NYSC Directorate.
This action followed an alleged assault on one of the Corps members by some female teachers, who accused her of failing to greet them.
Reports further reveal that NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, visited the school on Monday. He subsequently proceeded to inspect the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 members at the ongoing orientation course in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area, Kwara State. The Director General ordered the temporary withdrawal of all Corps members serving at the school to ensure their safety.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in Kwara State, Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed the temporary withdrawal of all Corps members serving at both the junior and senior secondary sections of the Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.
“Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving at the school have been temporarily withdrawn pending the outcome of the investigation into the alleged assault on one of the Corps members. Although the Corps member who was assaulted works in the junior school, we decided to withdraw all Corps members, including those in the senior school, to ensure their safety,” Morakinyo said.
It was reported that a female Corps member, whose name has been withheld, was assaulted on Thursday by some teachers at the school for allegedly failing to greet them properly. The incident occurred when the Corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. Eyewitnesses claimed the teachers beat and stripped the Corps member after reprimanding her for not greeting them properly. They also allegedly tore her NYSC white T-shirt, with another teacher joining in the attack by slapping her.
The Kwara State government condemned the assault and set up a panel to investigate the matter. The state’s Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, expressed outrage over the incident.
“The Kwara State Government condemns the alleged assault on the Corps member at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende. The teacher involved, Mrs. Amuzat Fatima Nike, is being investigated. This act is unacceptable, and Kwara State, known for its peace and harmony, will not tolerate such actions that disrupt the tranquility of its educational institutions,” she stated.
To address the situation, the Anti-Loitering Team of the Ministry and the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission’s Management Team visited the school for an unscheduled investigation. Calm was reportedly restored in the school.
The Commissioner also urged the NYSC management and all concerned parties to remain patient and law-abiding, assuring them that the teacher involved would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
