Osun hospital detains newborn over mother’s ₦700,000 medical debt

Story by Susan Mbamah

A public outcry has erupted in Osun State after a hospital allegedly detained a newborn baby over the inability of the child’s mother to settle a medical bill of about ₦700,000.

According to reports, the mother, who delivered at the facility, was prevented from leaving with her baby after hospital management insisted that the outstanding bill must be paid in full before discharge. The development has sparked widespread condemnation, with many describing the action as inhumane and a violation of the rights of both mother and child.

Human rights advocates and members of the public have called on the Osun State Government and relevant health authorities to intervene urgently, stressing that detaining patients or newborns over unpaid bills is unlawful and unethical.

As of press time, the hospital management had yet to issue an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident, while calls continue for strict enforcement of patients’ rights and accountability within the healthcare system.
