Over 10 school children, teachers killed in mass shooting

At least ten persons, including students and teachers have been confirmed dead following a tragic mass shooting at a high school in the Austrian city of Graz.

Authorities said the lone suspect, believed to be responsible for the deadly attack, died from a self-inflicted gunshot injuries.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released pending formal investigation and notification of next of kin.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 9a.m. local time, where chaos and panic had erupted inside the school premises.

According to local police, the gunman entered the building armed and opened fire in multiple classrooms before turning the weapon on himself.

“The situation was devastating,” said Police Chief Markus Lechner during a press briefing.

He added, “We are doing everything possible to support the victims’ families and uncover the circumstances that led to this horrific act.”

Authorities stressed that the motive for the attack remained unknown.

They however said they were currently combing through the suspect’s digital footprint and interviewing witnesses in an effort to piece together what may have led to the shooting.

Austrian Chancellor Anna-Lena Hofer expressed deep sorrow in a statement. “Today is a dark day for our nation. We mourn the innocent lives lost and stand with the families and school community during this painful time.”

Classes have been suspended indefinitely at the affected school, and grief counseling services have been made available to students, staff, and their families.

As the investigation unfolds, local officials urged the public to avoid speculation and allow law enforcement to complete its work.

“We need answers, but more importantly, we need healing,” said Education Minister Claudia Weiss.
