Pastor in court for faking own death to avoid paying N3 million debt

Police in Ondo State have arraigned Pastor Paul Oyewole before a Magistrate’s Court for faking his death in an attempt to avoid paying the N3 million he borrowed from his church member.

According to a report by the Nation, the court charged the Ondo-based cleric for falsely printing and posting his obituary on WhatsApp after he sent a fake bank alert to his creditor, Boyede Emmanuel.

He reportedly committed the offence between November 2021 and May 2022.

Pastor Oyewole was charged with obtaining money fraudulently in the pretence of repayment within seven days.

It was also revealed that the cleric had threatened the complainant on phone with the intent to intimidate him and conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace when he stripped himself naked in front of the complainant’s house.

Oyewole, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him in which the police prosecutor, Sergeant Akao Moremi, said he would call four witnesses to testify in the case.

The defendant’s lawyer, Mrs Queen Arokoyo, applied for bail on liberal terms.

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Mosunmola Ikujuni, granted the defendant bail to the sum of N1 million with two credible sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case to February 13 for further hearing.
