Police rescue ‘one chance’ suspects from angry mob in Abuja

Three suspected members of a “one chance” robbery syndicate were saved from being lynched by an angry mob in Wuse 2, Abuja, on Friday.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at Chicken Junction. The suspects, who were in an unmarked taxi, allegedly attempted to rob a female passenger.

Raymond Jonathan, a witness, said the victim had just entered the vehicle when the suspects threatened her and demanded her phone and bank details.

She immediately raised an alarm, and passersby quickly stopped the vehicle, pulled the suspects out, and began beating them.

The mob’s attack was cut short by the arrival of police officers in a Hilux van. The officers rescued the suspects from the scene, an intervention Jonathan said prevented the men from being killed on the spot.

The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Adeh Josephine, confirmed that officers received a distress call early Friday morning. They found two people on the ground at the junction who were still alive. The individuals were rescued and taken to the National Hospital for treatment.

She added that the crowd dispersed upon the arrival of the police, and no arrests were made in connection with the attempted robbery.
