Senate sets up committee to review tax reform bills amidst controversy

The Senate has set up a committee led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) to review the contentious areas within the proposed tax reform bills and provide feedback to the full Senate prior to public hearings on the bills.

Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North) announced the formation of the committee during Wednesday’s plenary session, highlighting the ongoing debates surrounding the bills.

He emphasised that the committee will engage with key stakeholders, including the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the executive branch, to gather insights.

On October 3, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, asserting that they would strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with his government’s development goals.

However, the proposals have faced significant opposition from various groups, including governors, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and other federal lawmakers.

Senator Barau also appointed Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North), among others as members of the committee.
