Shehu Sani, others react as Portugal trash Super Eagles 4-0 in int’l friendly

Kenneth AFOR, LAGOS

Nigerians and other football enthusiasts have reacted after the Super Eagles were trashed 4-0 by Portugal in an international friendly on Thursday night at the José Alvalade stadium in Lisbon.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes scored twice to put the home team ahead early in the ninth and 35th minute (penalty).

The Super Eagles were quite impressive in the midfield but lacked creativity in the attack and coordination in the defence which led them to conceive two more goals in the 82nd and 84th minute scored by Gonçalo Ramos and João Mário respectively.

The abysmal outing by the Super Eagles on Thursday portrayed the inability of the current crop of players to face their opponents head on and get the desired results.

Reacting to the match, a former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani expressed his displeasure via a tweet saying it was a blessing the country did not qualify for the World Cup.

“Not going to World Cup in Qatar is a blessing,” he tweeted.

@ELEGBETE1SPORTS tweeted, “I don’t care the quality of manager you employ for this Super Eagles, the players would still make him look like an amateur coach. inaccurate passing, poor positioning and gross lack of purpose. How hard can it be, to get a team to play as a unit?”

@ben_1daEbiri, “Is it a coincidence that these players perform well for their various clubs? Of course not! We’re yet to get a couch that can combine and play these players to their strengths and sadly Poseiro isn’t it.”

@leluofficial, “For Nigeria, was supporting Portugal cos I knew the Super Eagles weren’t going to put up a performance, since they had nothing to lose.”

@AbiakamChukwub1, “Last night game against Portugal is just an example of what Nigeria as a nation is, there was not team work, everyone was just trying to impress the fans and sell themselves. This is not the Super Eagles is grew up watching because our players are very good, just a disgrace.”

@prettycachy, “This very moment made the proudest ?? on earth on that day. I recall my late dad carrying me on his shoulder around the street of Bale Ayetoro in Ajegunle shouting and rejoicing with unspeakable joy. The set of players we have now in Super Eagles are extremely poor.”

@SirEwomaOgidi, “I’m happy we’re seeing the good job Gernot Rohr did for Super Eagles, meeting the targets set out for him, competitive against any and everyone… With a very young team. @thenff under Amaju have been a disgrace.”

@fisy2k, “A huge blessing. The Super Eagles should be disbanded and have a fresh start.. something Clemence Westerhoff did in 1989 when he brought the likes of the then 19-year-old named Daniel Amokachi of the defunct (Alex Dominguez-coached) Ranchers Bees of Kaduna into the Super Eagles.”
