Sowore released after arrest at Lagos airport

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, has been released shortly after his arrest at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos State.

Earlier reports indicated that Sowore was detained upon his arrival at the airport on Sunday morning. His flight had departed from Washington Dulles International Airport at 6:14 EDT and landed in Lagos at approximately 9:43 WAT.

In a social media post, Sowore disclosed that upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, his passport was seized, and he was informed of an order for his detention. He criticized the action as part of a broader crackdown on dissent by the current administration, which he refers to as the “fascist @officialAbat regime.”

“This is not unexpected because I have always known that it is part of the broader clampdown by the fascist @officialAbat regime on dissent and their fear of the upcoming #FearlessINOctober revolt,” Sowore stated. He also urged citizens to continue resisting tyranny through planned direct actions starting from October 1.

A memo from the Department of State Services (DSS), leaked on September 12, 2024, had revealed an order for Sowore’s arrest upon his arrival in Nigeria. However, Sowore confirmed his release in a follow-up post, stating, “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me.”

Sowore’s brief detention and subsequent release come amid ongoing tensions and political unrest in Nigeria. His case highlights the increasing scrutiny of political figures and activists in the country.
