Supporters of Abduljabbar decry attempt to block death sentence appeal

Followers of Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru-Kabara, who was sentenced to death in Kano for blasphemy, have raised concerns over alleged attempts to obstruct his appeal against the court’s judgment.

Speaking on behalf of the followers in a press conference held on Sunday in Kano, Ibrahim-Abdullahi Warure accused certain clerics of exerting pressure to dismiss the appeal.

According to Warure, these clerics have been pressuring the incoming government and the court to support the death sentence, which is deeply troubling to the followers.

He emphasized that they will continue to pursue the case currently before the High Court in Kano until justice is served for their spiritual leader.

Warure stressed that the appeal is an inherent right of the cleric, as enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria.

He advised the “antagonistic” clerics to refrain from interfering and allow the court to perform its duties without any influence.

“We condemn their relentless campaign of defamation against our revered Sheikh and their threats towards the court, which we consider contemptuous of both the court and the government,” added Warure.

He urged the security agencies to intervene and caution those opposed to the appeal, ensuring they do not exploit the situation to disrupt the peace in the event that Sheikh Abduljabbar ultimately triumphs in court.

The cleric was imprisoned for blasphemy on July 17, 2021, and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging on December 15, 2022, by an Upper Shari’a Court in Kano.

He has filed an appeal against the death sentence before a High Court in Kano.
